Sunday Friends is an amazing program which relies heavily on volunteers to successfully implement their activities. We Rotarians can help in many ways. The first, and most obvious, is to sign up to be a volunteer at one of their Sunday programs—either the 2nd or the 4th Sunday of each month. Here is where we are literally hands-on, helping our neighbors on the East Side learn new skills and resources to help them in everyday life. The children are so fun and engaging, this is where I like to spend my time when I’m there—interacting with the children. If this appeals to you as a volunteer opportunity, please go to their website and sign up. List yourself as a member of the Rotary Club of San Jose East/Evergreen. And wear your Rotary T-shirt!! Click on the “Volunteers” tab. There you’ll find instructions on how to sign up, whether you’re a new volunteer or a returning volunteer. List yourself as a member of the Rotary Club of San Jose East/Evergreen. And wear your Rotary T-shirt!! But please, do this 2 weeks ahead of time, if possible. Sometimes they have too many volunteers, and if you sign up late, you may be thanked but not allowed. The second way to help is to bring donations of new household goods, things we use everyday in our homes such as toilet paper, paper towels, dish soap, shampoo, cleaning supplies, etc., the list goes. Go to their website, click on “Donate” and you’ll see a list of everything they can use. If you want a receipt for taxes, you can also find instructions on how to print the form. You can drop it off during their program hours. You can also head up a drive to collect these items. Lily Perez-Ngo has been my endlessly patient staff advisor, and can answer all your questions if you can’t find the answer on the website. Her number is 408-217-9587, and she is there M-Th. If you can get a group of friends together, you can ask Lily about making the kits they use at the programs. If you aren’t able to do any of this, you can still help out with a private donation. Please consider supporting Sunday Friends in some manner, if you’re able. They are a huge gift to their clients, and our support as Rotarians would be a huge donation towards their efforts. |
