Scholarships Update

The members of the Gerald and Dorothy Erich Endowment Fund Board of Directors are excited to report:

$44,000 in scholarships to attend local community colleges have been awarded to ten students receiving funding for their second scholarship year 2018-19 and twelve new awardees for funding their first year in the 2019-20 cycle.

Comments from 2019-20 students after learning their applications had been approved:
  • Thank you so much! I am honored to receive this scholarship and happy that I was selected as the recipient for the Gerald and Dorothy Endowment Fund. The college I will be attending is De Anza Community College
  • Thank you so much for this scholarship! The college I’m attending next fall is West Valley Community College. Thank you for granting me this opportunity for this scholarship!
  • Thank you so much. I am honored to receive this scholarship. My family and I are grateful for your contribution in furthering my education. Please continue to provide this scholarship to future students because it really makes an impact in students success.
We've also heard from students who have completed their first year at college in the 2018-19 round of scholarships:

  • I've been so grateful for the scholarship.
  • My experience at De Anza so far has been incredibly enriching. I love the freedom of choosing the classes that most interest me which also allows me to allot time for my creative endeavors! There's a stigma that comes with going to community college in this society, but I've encountered nothing but truly insightful and knowledgeable professors that care for the growth of their students and they're actually able to do so given the relatively small classroom sizes. My appreciation for higher education has tremendously grown throughout these past few months, and I'm more excited to go to school now than I've ever in my schooling experiences. Thank you for contributing to this journey in my life!
  • Thank you for reaching out, I am doing awesome! I just finished my first semester at EVC with a 4.0, am continuing with volunteering and shadowing doctors at SCVMC, and am working part-time as a server at Kickin’ Crab. I really appreciate what Rotary has done for me. It means a lot to my family and I.

June 13, 2019 Meeting

We have two special visitors attending our June 13th meeting at The Ranch:

  1. Min, our Youth Exchange Student from South Korea, who will share experiences from his time with local families and schools.
  2. Mr. Edward Alvarez, our program speaker who will address the topic of Education in the News
Edward Alvarez has extensive background and experience in the education sector. His education experience includes services on various advisory committees, including the East Side Union High School District and the California Community Colleges Advisory Committee on Minority Affairs. He was elected to the East Side Union High School District Board of Trustees and served a seven-year term during which the District constructed 8 high schools. He served a 7-year term on the Board of trustees of Santa Clara University as well as the Board Real Estate and Finance Committee.

Join us tomorrow for fellowship and learning and to give our visitors a warm San Jose East/Evergreen welcome!

Club Assembly June 20, 2019

Our June 20th Assembly will require members to decide on changes that have been discussed by your board over the past several months.

As members of the Visioning Committee, Robbie Izat, Harbiner Sikka, and Sara Calkns decided to focus on one element to stress as our first priority in the 5-year plan to see the Vision become real -- that is the element of Membership.

Garnering insights from District 5170 training workshops that stress FLEXIBILITY, we have presented to the club board a scheme to make our club membership more available to more people.

As District Membership Chair, Robbie noticed there have been potential Rotarians who are only available on Saturdays; others only in the evenings. A re-designed club meeting schedule to be more flexible was presented to the board at its May meeting and the re-design was approved "in concept." However a change this basic needs to be presented to the members before we go ahead and make the change.

The proposed change is to have two meetings at lunch time on Thursdays at The Ranch, one Thursday evening social at a local eatery and one Saturday project-driven meeting each month.

Contact the Visioning Committee members and/or members of the Club Board of Directors if you have any questions. AND do plan to attend the June 20 meeting - every vote counts!
